Today, The University of Texas System Board of Regents voted to align The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler and The University of Texas at Tyler under one administrative structure. This process will take some months to accomplish and will require approval from our various accreditation agencies, but I wanted you to hear from me how excited I am about what this means for us.
The alignment will be a major triumph to both universities as it will foster collaboration and create a unified environment for students, faculty and staff. It will allow the two institutions to leverage our strengths, grow capacity and resources, and better accomplish our higher education mission in a more seamless fashion.
Chairman Eltife and the Board of Regents are making this momentous decision because they believe in East Texas and they believe in our future. That is made evident by the announcement last month of an unprecedented $95 million investment in health education in Tyler.
As I stated a few weeks ago, I have never witnessed as much promise for the future of East Texas as I see today. The University of Texas has three strong institutions in East Texas: UT Tyler, UT Health Science Center Tyler, and the UT Health East Texas Health System. It’s time for our students in East Texas to have more opportunities to pursue their education at home through the benefits of seamless pathways throughout all of the University of Texas institutions in Tyler.
Today’s announcement is only the beginning of many advancements for our region. I am proud to be part of UT System, and this announcement will help us deliver our mission of providing excellent patient care and community health, comprehensive education, and innovative research.
Thank you for all that you do and I hope you share with me this sentiment of pride!
